We do not progress in our healing. We go deeper. We arrive at the same view again and again, at a new depth, with new awareness and understanding. It can feel frustrating to be returning to the same repeating view (mother issues, again?) but you have learned much, you have grown much, you have changed much.

Know Thyself

That which is easier-said-than-done

As attachment-based beings, acceptance is a basic need. As we develop our sense of self, we naturally rely on external validation to shape our identity. As we grow, the external validation should be tempered with Inner Knowing. Ideally, our early relationships should offer the first glimpse of our true self. Depending on the mirroring we receive, a distorted self-perception can emerge, making us fixated on how others see us. If our sense of self is fractured, the Inner Knowing can be replaced with External Seeking.

Befriending the Shadow

ShadoWork is exactly that - work. Wholeness doesn't happen accidentally.

In the process of External Seeking, we can mutiny parts of ourselves that are deep feeling. The parts of ourselves we push away in order to be accepted, these repressed emotions, become “the shadow self” - a feral fracturing that arises through frustration, as our psyches strive for wholeness. As Gabor Mate describes this, we are pushed and pulled between Acceptance and Authenticity. We choose Acceptance until we can no longer not choose Authenticity. Avoiding these parts of ourselves can lead to addiction, stress, and burnout.

Modern society’s toxic productivity culture worsens this cycle of existential exhaustion & imposter syndrome, as chaos and disconnection become the most familiar. Intentional ShadoWork through introspection and embodiment can integrate repressed parts of identity as you begin to know yourself.
